Cardiovascular health and brain health are closely linked, though this connection is not always recognized. A study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry (2023) has shown that cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking not only affect heart health but are also closely related to cognitive decline. Specifically, these effects appear 10 years earlier in men than in women. This highlights the importance of protecting cardiovascular health from middle age to reduce the risk of brain-related issues.
The study analyzed data from 34,425 participants in the UK Biobank Project, with an average age of 63, ranging from 45 to 82 years old. Using advanced imaging technology such as voxel-based morphometry (VBM), scientists found that high levels of visceral and abdominal fat significantly reduced gray matter volume in critical areas of the brain. These regions, responsible for processing sensory information, memory, and emotional regulation, were significantly affected in men aged 55 to 74, while women typically experienced the highest risk from 65 to 74 years old. This result suggests that physiological and hormonal differences may contribute to the timing of these risks between genders.

The affected areas mainly include the temporal lobes, where functions like processing sound, images, and memory occur. The study also showed that brain volume decline follows a bell-shaped curve, with lower risk in those under 55 and over 75 years old. However, this does not mean that these age groups are entirely safe from risk. Lifestyle habits and cardiovascular health still play a critical role in maintaining cognition at any age.
“The most important thing to remember is that it’s never too early to prioritize heart health. Small lifestyle changes can provide long-term benefits for both the heart and the brain.” – Dr. Jonathan Rasouli, Staten Island University Hospital Northwell
Furthermore, managing conditions like obesity and diabetes with medication can benefit not only heart health but also help protect the brain. For example, diabetes medications have been shown to improve cognitive function by controlling blood sugar levels. However, lifestyle changes are still considered the best method for preventing cognitive decline.

Healthy habits such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, managing weight, and controlling blood pressure not only improve cardiovascular health but also protect brain function. In particular, foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E can help prevent brain damage caused by free radicals. Additionally, experts emphasize that women, especially after menopause, need to have a specific health care strategy to maintain better cognitive health.

Understanding the link between cardiovascular and brain health is the first step in preventing cognitive decline. Research shows that prioritizing heart protection from middle age, particularly before age 55, can significantly reduce the risk of serious brain issues. This serves as an important reminder that taking care of your health not only helps you maintain a healthy heart but also protects your memory and mental clarity throughout your life.
