The Human Brain Project (HBP) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in neuroscience research by successfully developing a model of a mouse brain integrated with a virtual mouse body in a simulation environment. Led by scientist Marc-Oliver Gewaltig, the research team built an integrated system where the virtual brain and body interact as they would in the real world. This is not only a technological leap but also opens the door to experiments on virtual organisms, significantly reducing the need for live animals in research.
“Creating a virtual organism is not just a technological exercise but a way to integrate data from diverse sources to better understand how the brain operates and interacts with the body.” (Marc-Oliver Gewaltig, Human Brain Project, 2023). This model provides a foundation for testing neurological theories in a safe and precise environment while evaluating how discrete data are unified within a complete system.
The project has implemented an advanced neurorobotics platform, a tool designed to simulate the behavior of virtual organisms in a digital space. The first software release of this platform was launched in April 2023, opening up opportunities for collaboration among scientists worldwide. This tool enables the simulation of complex interactions between the mouse brain and body, allowing researchers to observe behavior, process neural signals, and explore the brain’s control mechanisms.
“The virtual mouse model not only helps us understand how the brain governs the body but also offers the opportunity to test neurological hypotheses without using live animals.”
(Journal of Neuroscience Research, 2023)
One of the critical applications of this model is its ability to replicate the real-life behaviors of mice, including how they respond to environmental cues and how the brain processes information to control movement. This promises to provide valuable insights into neurological disorders and the development of new treatments. By minimizing reliance on live animal experiments, the project delivers not only scientific value but also addresses ethical challenges in biomedical research.

Beyond creating vivid models, this project serves as a tool for verifying the accuracy of existing data and hypotheses about the brain. By integrating data from various sources, researchers can identify the most critical factors in the brain’s operating mechanisms. This not only enhances our understanding of neuroscience but also paves the way for applying these findings to technology and medicine.
The Human Brain Project is not solely focused on mice but also aims to develop more complex brain models in the future. This represents not only a technological advance but also a powerful tool for exploring how the brain functions, including how it generates behavior, stores memory, and processes information. With this platform, neuroscience has taken a significant step closer to unraveling the mysteries of the human brain.
