Jupiter-like planets, with their massive size and critical role in planetary system formation, have become a key factor in the search for Earth-like worlds. Scientists have long recognized that the presence and behavior of these planets can significantly influence whether rocky, potentially habitable planets can form. According to data from NASA’s Kepler mission, researchers analyzed 63 planetary systems with “hot Jupiters” – planets orbiting very close to their host stars, with orbital periods of just around three days.
“The migration of Jupiter-like planets shortly after their formation can disrupt or even prevent the formation of Earth-like planets,” said Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution, co-author of a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2012. This phenomenon is explained by the “inward migration” of hot Jupiters, caused by gravitational interactions with the gas and dust disk surrounding young stars.

Findings from research conducted by Jason Steffen’s team at Fermilab’s Center for Particle Astrophysics indicate that in the 63 hot Jupiter systems observed, there was no evidence of nearby companion planets. One possible explanation is that these companion planets were destroyed or ejected during the hot Jupiters’ migration phase. Conversely, systems with “warm Jupiters” – which have more distant orbits compared to hot Jupiters – show a higher likelihood of companion planets. Among the 31 warm Jupiter systems, three showed signs of potential planets.
This leads to a critical conclusion: “If our Solar System had a hot Jupiter, Earth could not exist,” according to Alan Boss. In reality, Jupiter in our Solar System currently acts as a “gravitational shield,” protecting inner planets from asteroids and comets. This stability may be a decisive factor in allowing Earth to develop life.
Blockquote for emphasis:
“Jupiter is not only the largest planet but also plays a defining role in shaping the entire Solar System. Its stability and structure provide a unique opportunity for life to form on Earth.” – NASA, 2020
However, many questions remain unanswered. For example, could hot Jupiters have companion planets that are too small or have irregular orbits, making them undetectable with current observation methods? To address this, scientists are expanding their studies to include Neptune-like planets (hot Neptunes) and warm Jupiter systems, where the likelihood of detecting companion planets is higher.

These studies not only open up opportunities to better understand planet formation but also provide hope for identifying Earth-like worlds in the future. The search for companion planets around hot or warm Jupiters is just the beginning, laying the groundwork for space missions like the James Webb or Roman Space Telescope, helping us advance further in the quest to discover signs of extraterrestrial life.
